Denver’s Best Trails for Dog Walking: A Local Dog Walker’s Guide šŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗ

Denver isn’t just a city for outdoor lovers — it’s a dog’s paradise! With hundreds of parks, trails, and open spaces, there’s no shortage of sniff-tastic spots to explore. As a local dog owner and walker, I’ve spent years discovering the best routes that pups (and their people) can’t get enough of.

Whether you’re a Denver native or just moved here with your four-legged friend, here are 7 of the best dog walking trails in the Mile High City — paw-picked for safety, scenery, and tail-wagging fun.

1. City Park Loop (East Denver)

šŸ“ Colorado Blvd & 17th Ave This iconic loop offers wide paths, lakeside views, and plenty of shade. Great for all breeds, with lots of squirrels to supervise. Bonus: You’ll get amazing views of the Denver skyline and mountains.

2. Washington Park (Wash Park)

šŸ“ S Downing St & E Virginia Ave A favorite among locals, Wash Park features two lakes, beautiful gardens, and a 2.6-mile loop that’s dog-friendly and stroller-friendly. Weekends can be busy, so mornings are your best bet for a peaceful walk.

3. Cherry Creek Trail

šŸ“ Runs through downtown into Cherry Creek State Park Ideal for high-energy pups who need more distance. It’s paved and well-maintained, with urban vibes near downtown and more nature the farther south you go.

4. Sloan’s Lake Park

šŸ“ W 17th Ave & Sheridan Blvd A breezy 2.6-mile loop around the lake with plenty of waterfowl for your pup to (gently) observe. It’s flat and wide, perfect for casual walks or light jogs.

5. Greenway Trail at Stapleton Central Park

šŸ“ Northfield Blvd & MLK Jr Blvd This hidden gem is perfect for off-the-beaten-path adventures. With prairie views and peaceful surroundings, it’s especially great for dogs who don’t love crowded spaces.

6. High Line Canal Trail

šŸ“ Multiple access points – check near Cherry Hills or Hampden One of Denver’s longest and most diverse trails. The soft dirt path is easy on paws and the shaded stretches are ideal for warm days.

7. Bear Creek Trail (Bear Creek Lake Park)

šŸ“ Just west of Denver in Lakewood A quick drive for a big payoff! This scenic trail is less trafficked, with beautiful foothill views. Just be sure to bring water and keep your pup leashed — wildlife sightings are common.

🦓 Trail Tips for Dog Owners

  • Always bring poop bags — even on remote trails.

  • Check the weather — Denver heat and elevation can be tough on dogs.

  • Bring water — for both you and your pup.

  • Leash laws vary — check signage or the city’s park rules.

  • Pack light, walk smart — a harness and good walking shoes make a huge difference!
